Government stonewalling on corruption comes under fire

Worsening financial strictures and revenue shortfalls are adding to the urgency of independent calls for tougher action against state skulduggery

As investigations multiply into conflicts of interests in state agencies, lawyers and rights activists are accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of covering up malfeasance. Their calls have grown more urgent after the Treasury defaulted on many of its financial obligations in December and triggered a tortuous restructuring of its local and international debts. After reaching agreement with the IMF for a US$3 billion credit, the government is cutting back on some critical public spending, claiming a chronic revenue shortfall.
