The ANC hones its strategy for election survival

Our correspondent has been given a sneak preview of the ruling party's campaign strategy. It is brutally populist and divisive but it might just work

Undeterred by the confident assessments in multiple opinion surveys that its share of the national vote will fall below 50% in next year's elections for the first time, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) is crafting an election plan to allow it to maintain its political dominance. It will be an uphill battle because of the popular view that the country is heading for a 'change election' in 2024.
