A new guard at the UN takes over but Africa’s concerns remain peacekeeping, fairer trade and development funding

This year's opening of the United Nations General Assembly on 25 September looked at times like a diplomatic apprenticeship. Freshly-installed Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was pitted against new political leaders from France, Britain and Nigeria, while some of the old guard from South Africa and the United States were planning their exits and successions after one final year in power.
