Brown bounces back

Corruption, a coup plot, a third term and a new opposition

There's nothing like a coup plot to distract attention from political troubles. It is widely believed in Blantyre that last week's alleged putsch was not a coup plot at all. Revelations on 26 March that Sudi Adaki Sulaimana was planning to topple the government were greeted with wry smiles. Sulaimana, a criminal rather than political animal, was gaoled on similar charges by Hastings Kamazu Banda's regime in 1993, pardoned by the incoming President Bakili Muluzi in 1994 and enrolled in the governing party's thuggish youth wing.
