The Mobutu factor

Seen from the other bank of the Oubangui River, the failed putsch in the Central African Republic reflects Congo-Kinshasa's own internal conflict. About 200 Congolese rebel fighters from Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo's Mouvement de Libération du Congo, commanded by their Chief of Staff, Colonel Amuli, joined the CAR army in putting down the CAR rebels. CAR's domestic problems, especially the rivalry between President Ange-Félix Patassé's supporters and André Kolingba's Yakoma people, spill across the Oubangui, which forms the Congo-CAR border.
