A scramble for vaccines

Despite pious pledges of equal access to the shots, Africa is losing out. Fixing that will take more cooperation and bold policy

While the outgoing chair of the African Union, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, was able to make a triumphant announcement on 13 January that the AU had 'secured' 230 million doses of vaccine, the small print of the arrangement is complicated, delivery is distant, and it falls well short of what is required.
