Putschists’ lethal attacks in Cotonou test Ecowas solidarity

Military help led by Nigeria and allies reinforced the regional bloc’s stand against the anti-Talon plotters

It is now clear that the thwarted coup in Cotonou was much more violent than first reported and determinedly targeted Benin’s President Patrice Talon and the most senior military officers. The rebels attacked Talon’s residence in Cotonou’s Guézo neighbourhood but also the homes of General Bertin Bada – the head of Talon’s military staff and key figure in the campaign against jihadist militant incursions in the north – and army chief of staff Gen Abou Issa and Colonel Faizou Gomina; the latter two were taken hostage.
