NEWSMAKER:  After Ouattara, ‘Photocopie’

Who would be in the new government? The buzz began after Côte d’Ivoire’s 27 December legislative elections, won by the ruling Rassemblement des houphoëtistes pour la démocatie et la paix (RHDP) of president Alassane Ouattara with 197 of the 255 seats. There was one novelty: a brand-new post of Vice Prime Minister. The job has been filled by Téné Birahima Ouattara, nicknamed ‘Photocopie’, since he resembles his elder brother so much, who is, of course, the president. ‘After Ouattara, Ouattara?’ read the 26 January headline of Le nouveau reveil, a newspaper close to the Parti démocratique de Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI), once in uncontested power and currently on the margins of Ivorian politics. The paper was unequivocal: the Ouattaras are planning a presidential dynasty.
