Jihadist onslaught exposes fatal flaws in Moscow’s Sahel tactics

The killing of Sadio Camara and the fall of Kidal to Tuareg rebels delivered a devastating blow to Assimi Goïta's junta and casts doubt on Russia's security claims

Amid a combined offensive by Tuareg and jihadist fighters against the Bamako junta at dawn on 25 April, the killing of Defence Minister General Sadio Camara, the architect of the defence partnership with Russia, has struck a symbolic blow against General Assimi Goïta's regime. Camara was killed when jihadist fighters detonated a car bomb outside his residence in Kati, the barracks town some 15 kilometres north-west of Bamako that houses the country’s main military base. Intelligence director Gen Modibo Kone and Army Chief of Staff Gen Ouma Diarra were also wounded in the jihadist attacks on the city.
