Critical minerals, rare earths and the Beijing-Moscow axis could reshape Washington’s view of Samia’s government

Looking for a way to target United States security and commercial interests, President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government wants to lean on Washington’s new ambassador to Tanzania, William Trachman, who described the country as being of ‘immense strategic importance’ during a rocky Senate hearing on 28 April. After conceding that the election violence had ‘raised serious concerns about Tanzania’s trajectory as a reliable partner’, Trachman was lambasted by senators claiming he was soft-pedalling on the Hassan government.
