Vila Nova win – Trovoada setback

On 19 July the incumbent President Carlos Vila Nova was re-elected with 56% of the vote. His main challenger, Nito d’Abreu, secured 41.4%. Only 41.3% of the 142,191 registered voters cast their ballots – the lowest turnout since 1991. Many voters were fed up with local politics, which have been dominated since 2025 by a split within the ruling Ação Democrática Independente (ADI).
