Saïed buckles in summer of discontent

A 55°C heatwave, power cuts and jailed dissidents have prompted a newly coordinated opposition to take on the regime

For the second month running, Tunisians have taken to the streets against President Kaïs Saïed, in what the Forum Tunisien pour les Droits Economiques et Sociaux (FTDES) says amounts to hundreds of separate protests nationwide over water and power cuts alone. The numbers on any single march remain modest: hundreds rather than the tens of thousands who turned out in the capital and beyond on 25 July. But the geographic spread of the latest protests, cutting across the interior governorates that Saïed has neglected, show the dissent spreading well beyond Tunis.
