Zambia

No longer copper-bottomed

Zambia’s democratic credentials have taken an hammering ahead of the planned presidential inauguration on 1 September at ‘a location to be announced.’ The results declaring incumbent Hakainde Hichilema the winner of Zambia’s presidential elections with 2.9 million votes (61.4%) against Brian Mundubile with 1.9m (38%) have an unusual credibility problem. Many, including local observers such as the Christian Churches Monitoring Group, reckon that Hichilema probably won the election: according to their parallel voter tabulation he won with about 56% of the vote to Mundubile’s 42%.
