How Mutharika went wrong

Bingu wa Mutharika was Malawi’s third President, after Hastings Kamuzu Banda and Bakili Muluzi. Born in 1934 in the Thyolo district of southern Malawi, he was educated at mission schools and was one of only 32 Malawians picked by Banda for higher education abroad, at the University of Delhi in India. On his return, he became an administrative officer in the Finance Ministry but went into self-imposed exile in 1964 in Zambia, where he changed his name from his birth name, Brightson Webster Ryson Thom.
