The boss is back

President Eyadèma has picked a new premier and is planning his own re-election

The one-party state is back in Togo. The resignation of Prime Minister Edem Kodjo on 19 August puts President Gnassingbé Eyadèma back in control, after dividing the opposition and reasserting his special relationship with President Jacques Chirac' s Gaullist government in Paris. Kodjo's replacement by Kwassi Klutse, a 'neutral technocrat', confirms Eyadèma's new ascendancy ahead of the presidential election in 1998. After a series of questionable by-election victories, Eyadèma' s Rassemblement du Peuple Togolais once more controls the National Assembly and looks like backtracking on its promises of constitutional reform.
