ZANU-PF digs for votes

Fuel trader Trafigura is boosting the ruling party by lending at an inordinate rate to a flagship agricultural programme

The commodity giant Trafigura is providing major financial support to a government programme called Command Agriculture in what is widely seen as a major boost to the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) government. Trafigura is a global trader with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. It had initially promised finance of US$80 million but the Agriculture and Farm Mechanisation Minister, Joseph Made, persuaded it to inject an additional $112 mn., say sources close to the deal in Harare. In a statement to Africa Confidential, however, Trafigura said it 'is not involved in the Command Agriculture project in Zimbabwe in any way.'
