Graft puts ANC on the spot

Allegations of Covid-related procurement fraud by ruling party officials are threatening to derail public confidence in the President

President Cyril Ramaphosa is in a desperate fight for the credibility of the African National Congress after a spate of arrests and asset seizures over fraud in the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE). He called the role of ruling party personnel an 'unforgiveable betrayal', admitting the ANC was 'Accused No. 1'. Already under heavy fire for not moving quickly enough to prosecute the beneficiaries of 'state capture' under President Jacob Zuma, he is attempting to act decisively to limit the damage.
