The economy will tilt the election

The ruling party's best chance of hanging on to the presidency is to engineer a boom, but that's easier said than done

On 7 December, Ghanaians are due to elect a successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in what is shaping up to be a tight race between Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress. Akufo-Addo pulled out the stops for Bawumia to win the race for the party's nomination last November. In doing so, the NPP leaders made an enemy in former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, a senior NPP member who walked out of the party in protest.
