Barren road to Arusha

The East African Community is not short on popularity; Somalia, South Sudan and Congo-Kinshasa have all joined the bloc in the past decade. But it is still hard to see why anyone would want the job of Secretary-General. Replacing Veronica Nduva will top the agenda at an EAC summit in early March. Nduva, who replaced Peter Mathuki in 2024 after he was accused of misappropriating EAC funds, was only ever a stop-gap appointment. Rotation dictates that Uganda is due to nominate her successor.
