As in Kenya, the ruling party has strengthened its grip despite multi-partyism

The ruling parties in East Africa's former one-party states are thriving. As President Daniel arap Moi's Kenya African National Union looks forward to a thumping victory in presidential and parliamentary elections on 28 December, President Benjamin Mkapa's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (Revolutionary Party) has clawed back much of its lost support. As in Kenya, opposition parties in Tanzania are weakened by personal rivalries and poor organisation; the most viable opposition party - the National Convention for Constitution-Maguezi - has split into rival factions.
