Bouteflika’s infirmity symbolises a rudderless state. The regime lacks the strength to produce domestic reform or regional reliability

It may have been a landslide but President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's April election victory failed to convince. It nonetheless left him and the powerful machine behind him promising a major transition. Yet, in spite of a surprising number of sources claiming major change is on the way, Algeria drifts towards Ramadan at the end of June under an elite with seemingly nothing to propose except more of the same.
