Global trade chaos undermines Africa’s prospects

US tariffs are disrupting trade routes, cutting into financial reserves and posing a threat to growth across the continent

Along with much of the rest of the world, the economic prospects for Africa have taken a serious hit due to the trade war launched by the United States and its sharp cuts to the multilateral system, including the green energy transition. Such assessments were common cause at the Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington DC from 21-26 April but with delegates differing sharply on the policy responses.
