Trump allies split over Mogadishu as Israel recognises breakaway Somaliland

Washington lobbyists are clashing over the rival claims of the federal government and the secessionists

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s federal government in Mogadishu is being targeted for security and governance failures by senior Republicans in the United States who want Washington to recognise the breakaway region of Somaliland. They argue that Somaliland’s maritime geography – it sits on the Gulf of Aden near the Bab el Mandeb shipping chokepoint into the Red Sea – make it a strong alternative to Djibouti, currently the biggest US base in Africa. It could give the US easier access to Berbera port and airfield, with one of the longest runways in the region.
