Problematic resurrection for AGOA trade scheme after Congress votes

Rival plans to extend Washington’s tariff relief offer – by one, three or sixteen years – are under review but South Africa looks set to be shut out

The US Senate is due to vote on the renewal of Washington’s preferential trade agreement with African economies in the next few days with South Africa facing the biggest risks: over 100,000 jobs and just over US$120 million in savings on tariffs on its exports to the US are on the line. The US trade preference scheme, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), expired last September and has to be renewed by Congress.
