The battle for ODM’s soul

The sacking of Edwin Sifuna as Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is a desperate attempt by party leader Oburu Odinga to contain divisions but risks breaking up the party and helping President William Ruto. Sifuna was dismissed by ODM’s National Executive Committee during a meeting in Mombasa on 11 February, after months of bitter disputes between him and the party establishment over whether ODM should remain part of President Ruto’s government and, as is now likely, form a joint ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
