Reaching out to the juntas, Wadagni redraws regional ties

A whirlwind of early visits to Niamey, Ouagadougou and Lomé breaks with the previous era and boosts the neighbourhood economy

Less than a month after being sworn in, Benin’s new President, Romuald Wadagni has met with Niger’s junta leader Abdourahmane Tiani and negotiated the reopening of their common border, boosting both economies. After talks on 20-21 June in Cotonou to draft defence, security and border agreements, Niger’s hardline security minister Mohamed Toumba and his team posed for a family photo with their Beninois counterparts – starkly contrasting with the last three years of antagonism.
