Cocoa’s season of chaos

Preparing farmers for the compliance burden posed by the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has been complicated by the slump in wholesale cocoa prices. The price of a tonne of cocoa has fallen to around US$3,000 – an 80% fall from its peak of $12,000 in 2024, when the EUDR was initially supposed to come into force. That has hit industry bodies such as Ghana’s Cocoa Board (Cocobod), which owes around €800 million ($933m) to the country’s cocoa farmers. It now has to manage the traceability system.
