Cash for impeachment

Rigathi Gachagua won the argument but lost the political battle after the High Court ruled that he was denied due process during the Senate hearing that led to his defenestration as Deputy President in October 2024 – yet still upheld his impeachment. Gachagua, who has formed his Democracy for the Citizens Party and cast himself as President William Ruto’s main rival in central Kenya, filed the case to overturn his impeachment more than a year ago. A victory wouldn’t have reinstated him as deputy, as he maintains he resigned. The distinction matters – impeachment bars him from contesting the 2027 general elections, easing Ruto’s path to a second term.
