As the implications of the emerging alignment in the Horn become clearer, United States President Donald J Trump’s administration calculates that behind the threat of renewed conflict in northern Ethiopia lurks a major rebalancing of power in the wider region. Washington’s security experts worry that stronger ties between Egypt, Eritrea, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) regime in Khartoum could tilt regional power dynamics strongly to Saudi Arabia’s advantage.
