A rift in the First Family

Gen Muhoozi’s latest aggressive crackdown on his political opponents has prompted criticism from his brother-in-law

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s 82-year-old President Yoweri Museveni and head of the Ugandan military, has spent the past two months asserting his grip on the state. He has co-opted senior officials in his father’s cabinet into the leadership structures of his political pressure group, ordered the shutdown of the country’s leading independent media, directed the arrest of key opposition figures, and expanded a crackdown against officials tied to a former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, once seen as a potential obstacle to his path to succeed his father.
