Cheaper robots, revolutionary consequences

The IMF says AI could add 4% to Africa’s GDP within a decade but the technology threatens the white-collar jobs that many governments are trying to create

Over a period of four days, the South African government was hit with two scandals involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) ‘hallucinations’. The first, on 27 April, was auto-parodic: Communications Minister Solly Malatsi had to withdraw his department’s AI policy after it was found to include fabricated, AI-generated references. The policy document was supposed to outline how the government should use AI, including proposals for an AI Ethics Board, an AI Ombudsperson, and a National AI Safety Institute.
