Patrice Motsepe: the reluctant contender

With a stream of national associations withdrawing their support for him, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association’s (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino is increasingly reliant on support from the 54 African football federations which he has courted by paying hundreds of millions of dollars into the Forward Funding programme targeted at local football clubs. He is also dependent on the goodwill of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, which we hear is under strain.
