Abiy’s military advantage meets a broader insurgent challenge

Federal forces retain superior air power, but the disparate coalition opposing them is stretching them across several fronts

The clashes which broke out on 23 September in Tigray are the fiercest since the TPLF signed the Pretoria accord with the Federal forces in November 2022. They are playing out against a new configuration of regional forces targeting Addis Ababa with risks that the conflict will feed into the devastating war in neighbouring Sudan.
