Tinubu’s machine storms the primaries

The President holds all the cards – money, incumbency and a weakened opposition – but volatile states could complicate voting next January

With nearly 10.9 million votes at the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary, President Bola Tinubu is confident of a resounding victory at the January 2027 polls. He will face Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who secured the presidential ticket of a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), turning the contest into a two-and-a-half-horse race. Dumebi Kachikwu emerged as presidential candidate of the other ADC faction pending final determination of ongoing court cases (AC Vol 67 No 10,Obi’s exit leaves the opposition back where it started).
