Oil industry exuberance

Publicly bullish about new oil and gas investment, political elites are nervous about losing public opinion

Algeria is beefing up its security forces to keep a lid on opposition this year. El Hirak (The Movement), whose actions in 2019 removed ex-president Abdelaziz Bouteflika – to be replaced by the more populist Abdelmadjid Tebboune by le pouvoir (the ‘Powers-that-be’) – remains cowed. As so often, the regime is using the security services and compliant courts to eliminate opposition and factional rivals of the current dominant group, led by Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Saïd Chengriha and the powerful presidential office head, Boualem Boualem, who is widely believed to wield more influence over decision-making than the ‘symbolic president’ Tebboune (AC Vol 62 No 12).
