A new flag in North Africa

After capturing areas to rule over in Iraq and Syria, IS finds jihadist groups flocking to its banner, including in the Maghreb and Sinai

New Islamist groups in the Maghreb are now joining those which have already declared their affiliation to 'Islamic State' (IS or Da'ish). The governments in conflict with the jihadists sometimes exaggerate the threat IS poses to attract sympathy and help, which makes assessments of its true strength difficult. It is also often hard to distinguish whether a group has simply changed its name to ride the IS bandwagon or has organisational links with its parent body, IS in Iraq and Shams/Levant (ISIS/ISIL).
