Protests on pause

Algerians became accustomed to staying at home during the 1990s conflict between the state and radical Islam. The extent to which they are prepared to observe the lockdown was evident from 20 March when El Hirak (The Movement) didn't march for the first Friday since February 2019. El Hirak may have observed President Abdelmajid Tebboune's 17 March ban on public gatherings, but popular opposition isn't going away. Anger was stirred by Karim Tabbou's one-year prison sentence for 'incitement to violence' and 'harming national security' in statements made on his Union Démocratique et Sociale (UDS) party's Facebook page.
