State takes control

Lawmakers agreed to President Mokgweetsi Masisi's plan to extend a State of Emergency (SoE) from 28 days to 6 months over the coronavirus outbreak despite complaints that the emergency powers are too draconian. The opposition says that too much power will be concentrated in the executive's hands and it will create opportunities for corruption and abuse of power by the ruling Botswana Democratic Party.
