Front-runners and hopefuls

In these elections, the first to be held in Congo-Kinshasa since March/April 1965, no less than 33 presidential candidates are registered with the Commission Electorale Indépendante (CEI). Perhaps five are serious contenders. Of the registered political parties, only 13 of 213 have been able to field a candidate in all 169 individual constituencies.
