Opposition parties, trades unions and civic activists are protesting against the breakneck schedule announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for presidential elections on 22 January 2010. Just weeks earlier, opposition groups had threatened mass protests if President Goodluck Jonathan’s government tried to extend its term in office. Nigeria has an unhappy history of regimes, usually military ones, finding reasons not to hand over power and not to hold elections.
