Boycotts and masks

Many independent candidates are standing in the local elections but that doesn’t lessen the main political divide

At least half of the candidates which the Commission électorale indépendante (CEI) has accepted for the regional and municipal elections on 21 April are running as independents. On the surface, they have little to do with the two main political currents, President Alassane Dramane Ouattara’s coalition and the Front populaire ivoirien (FPI) of ex-President Laurent Gbagbo, who now awaits trial for human rights violations at the International Criminal Court.
