The warnings before Westgate

The growing politicisation and corruption within the state security system help explain the government’s poor coordination and its failure to act on warnings it received before the attack on the Westgate Shopping Mall. Amid internal wrangling and bloody purges following its loss of the two main ports in Somalia, Al Shabaab has asserted its resilience by extending to the wider region the mayhem it has recently brought to Mogadishu.
