Vedanta cools row

India’s Vedanta Resources has moved to placate President Michael Sata after claims that the head of its Zambian subsidiary, Kishore Kumar, had insulted the Lusaka government. Kumar had met Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda on 7 November to discuss reports that 1,529 workers might be laid off at Vedanta’s Konkola Copper Mines (KCM, AC Vol 47 No 4, Copper friendly). President Sata had threatened to revoke Vedanta’s mining licence if it went through with the lay-offs.
