Frelimo picks a candidate

After a strong challenge from his rivals, the governing party has chosen Guebuza’s man to stand in the presidential election

After more than a year of uncertainty and speculation, the party in power has finally chosen the Defence Minister, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, as its presidential candidate for the October election. Nyusi won a convincing victory over President Armando Guebuza’s staunch enemy, Luísa Diogo. She garnered only 31% of the vote by the Central Committee of the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique to his 68%. Unable to serve a third term, Guebuza wanted a candidate loyal to him and whom he could control. Angered by the allegations of corruption and alarmed by the conduct and results of the local elections, other Frelimo factions had fought back and did unexpectedly well through Diogo. Nyusi is almost certain to win in October, however.
