Liberia's Police Director, Joe Tate, is on the warpath against those who threaten what he calls 'good order'. In an anti-crime drive, his policemen have shot dead several alleged armed robbers. When the independent newspaper The Inquirer questioned police methods, its Managing Editor, Phillip Wesseh, was arrested and interrogated for several hours in late September, then released. The police said Wesseh had himself been implicated in investigations into armed robberies. Samuel Kofi Woods, Director of the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission in Monrovia, made a public protest about Wesseh's treatment.
