President Joyce Banda’s distribution of free grain continues a tradition of opaque election funding

The sight of President Joyce Banda handing out large bags of free maize with her name boldly printed on them in red is common as the election campaign gathers pace. She is spending on an epic scale and may well secure the presidency as a result at the polls on 20 May. Several of her predecessors did likewise. The maize is purchased by her charitable Joyce Banda Foundation and distributed free throughout the country. She has also been giving cows and goats to small farmers, blurring her roles as ruler and election candidate (AC Vol 55 No 3, Scandals to dominate polls).
