Election officials under fire

The Malawi Electoral Commission, which is headed by Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Maxon Mbendera, has been under constant attack – despite the fact that it includes commissioners from all the major parties. This apparent guarantee of the MEC’s independence and fairness has not succeeded in dampening criticism. Its main job has been to compile the electoral register. Some Malawi Congress Party members claim it has been inflated, while the Democratic Progressive Party, for one, says it does not reflect the number of electors in their strongholds.
