Touring Africa in the wake of the global credit crunch has been a sobering experience for China's Commerce Minister, Chen Deming. His 12-19 January trip began in Kenya, where Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta complained about Kenya's trade imbalance with China. More agreeably, in Zambia, Chen and President Rupiah Banda signed off on new infrastructure projects, including a stadium and government offices, and opened a Lusaka export processing zone for Chinese companies. (China is building similar zones in Nigeria, Egypt and Ethiopia.)
