Human rights campaigner Desmond Tutu is not winning many friends in Beijing. The Archbishop drew China’s ire in October last year by inviting the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, to his 80th birthday celebrations. The ensuing diplomatic furore – after the South African government stonewalled the religious leader’s visa application – cast a pall over the two countries’ relations (AAC Vol 4 No 12). A February trip to India took Tutu to Dharamsala, the home of the Dalai Lama. A crackdown in Tibet was under way across the border in China, and Tutu and his fellow Nobel laureate called on China to grant Tibet its constitutional autonomy.
