Sanusi Lamido Sanusi wrote an op-ed in London’s Financial Times in March that compared Chinese involvement in Africa to that of the Europeans in the colonial era. ‘China takes our primary goods and sells us manufactured ones. This was also the essence of colonialism. The British went to Africa and India to secure raw materials and markets. Africa is now willingly opening itself up to a new form of imperialism,’ he wrote. Sanusi urged African governments to view China as a competitor rather than an ally, drawing Beijing’s ire.
